Птушкі з народам / birds with the people, 2022-2023

The series consists of large-format double-sided painted carpets, which draw on the recent history of the protest movement in Belarus: The anti-government protests of the 2020s and Russia’s strong intervening in Belarus since the start of the war in Ukraine. The title quotes the slogan of one of the oldest environmental protection organisation in Belarus “Ахова птушак Бацькаўшчыны”. The organisation was classified as extremist and was closed by the government, as were most NGOs in Belarus in recent years.
Naprushkina refers to the different narratives of the art history: the history of „Maljavanka“ or „dyvan“, the painted, self-woven carpets that was widespread in the rural areas in region of Belarus, Poland and Ukraine and to UNOVIS – the Vitebsk Avant-Garde School of the 1920s. Both have existed side by side, one of them has become part of the established art history, and the other marganalized to local craft, mostly associated with female anonymous domestic work.
